Priest Facing Sexual Assault Charges Expected to be Back in Court February

A P.E.I. Roman catholic priest is accused of sexual offences against a minor and is expected to be back in court in February.

Maurice Joseph Praught, 70 years of age, of Stratford, P.E.I. had his case called briefly in Summerside on Dec. 21, 2022. Where it had been quickly deferred until Feb. 8, 2023, due to the crown and defence needing more time to review the court documents.

Maurice is currently facing three counts of sexual assault and six counts of sexual exploitation. Each one of the charges is related to the same male victim, who had reportedly been 14 year old at the time that the offences started. These incidents allegedly took place between 1993 and 1997 in Summerside area.

There is currently a publication ban in place regarding information that could lead to the identity of the victim.

The Summerside Police Services had begun their investigation after the Diocese of Charlottetown reported the alleged incidents in May. The diocese indicated to the police at the time of reporting the offences that the priest had already been removed from his duties.
