A former music teacher from the Truro area has been found guilty in Nova Scotia Supreme Provincial Court on charges of sexual touching of a young person involving a former student. The teacher, Lorna Elaine Letcher, of Valley in Colchester County, was convicted earlier this week in connection with incidents dating back many years.
Letcher served as a band director at Cobequid Educational Centre and was also known locally as a music instructor and volunteer. The charges related to alleged conduct that occurred when the complainant was a minor under her instruction.
Court proceedings have concluded on the guilt verdict; a sentencing hearing is scheduled later this year, where a judge will determine the appropriate sentence for the offences.
Your Legal Options After Experiencing Sexual Assault or Abuse
At Wagners, we understand that individuals who experience sexual assault or abuse — especially at the hands of someone in a position of trust — can face profound emotional, psychological, and social effects. These experiences are deeply personal and challenging to navigate.
If you have been affected by sexual assault, including historic instances of abuse by a teacher or other authority figure, there are several legal avenues that you may consider:
- Working with Law Enforcement and Criminal Charges
Reporting to police and assisting in criminal proceedings can play a critical role in accountability and public safety. While criminal prosecutions do not directly provide monetary compensation to survivors, they can result in consequences for the perpetrator that reflect the seriousness of the conduct. - Civil Lawsuits
In addition to criminal justice processes, survivors may choose to pursue a civil action against an individual and, in some cases, institutions that may have had a duty of care. Civil claims can seek compensation for the harm suffered, including emotional distress, therapy costs, and other impacts associated with the abuse.
Support, Understanding, and Professional Guidance
No form of legal remedy can erase the pain caused by sexual assault or abuse. However, understanding your rights and legal options, and having compassionate, knowledgeable support, can be an important part of moving forward.
Wagners Law Firm provides professional and confidential guidance tailored to each person’s unique circumstances. We take the time to listen, to assess the specifics of your situation, and to help you understand the legal paths that may be available to you.
Factors that may influence compensation include:
- The emotional and psychological impact of the abuse
- The need for medical or therapeutic care resulting from the experience
- The longer-term effects on everyday life and well-being
