The QMJHL is facing a class action suit by former player over allegations of hazing abuse with 2 teams

A former player with the Quebec major Junior Hockey League has filed a class-action lawsuit against the league and its teams alleging hazing abuse.

Carl Latulippe played for the league’s Chicoutimi Saguenéens and the Drummondville Voltigeurs between 1994 and 1996 and claims that he was abused during hazing rituals with both teams.

Latulippe, now 45, alleges being been forced by veteran players of the Chicoutimi Saguenéens to undress and masturbate in front of his teammates on a team bus, with team coaches having full knowledge of the abuse that was happening. His lawsuit says he was later traded to the Drummondville Voltigeurs where he again experienced abuse by members of that team during the hazing rituals.

The proposed class action lawsuit was filed In Quebec city on Tuesday, and a Quebec Superior Court judge must authorize the case before it can proceed. The Quebec league, member franchises and umbrella organization, the Canadian Hockey League, are the targets of the action which, at this stage, is seeking payment of $650,000 in damages for Latulippe, and an additional $15 million to be shared among the other alleged victims.

The action seeks to represent “all hockey players who have experienced abuse while they were minors and playing in the QMJHL starting from July, 1969.”
