Air Canada Flight 8646 Collision at LaGuardia

HALIFAX, NS – On March 22, 2026, at approximately 11:40 p.m. (ET), Air Canada Flight 8646 arriving at LaGuardia Airport, NY, from Montreal collided with a firefighting vehicle while landing on the tarmac. The cockpit of the aircraft detached upon impact, and the pilot and co-pilot were pronounced deceased at the scene.

The flight carried 72 passengers and four crew members. Dozens of passengers sustained injuries, and 41 individuals were transported to area hospitals for treatment.

The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation, with the Transportation Safety Board of Canada assisting pursuant to international aviation protocols, to examine the circumstances surrounding the collision, including runway operations and the coordination between air traffic control and ground vehicles at the time of the collision.
