Sexual Assault Investigation of 2003 and 2018 Canadian World Junior Teams

Two of Team Canada’s men’s world junior hockey teams are being investigated for alleged group sexual assaults that occurred in 2003 and 2018. The Halifax, Nova Scotia, police are now investigating the sexual assault that occurred in 2003, when Halifax hosted the World Junior Tournament.  The London, Ontario, police investigated an allegation of group sexual assault stemming from when London hosted the World Junior Tournament in 2018. The London police closed their investigation in February 2019 without charges.[1] However, with the revived scrutiny the London police have re-opened their investigation.[2]

In May of 2022, Hockey Canada settled a $3.55 million dollar lawsuit with a women who alleged that she was assaulted by eight former Canadian Hockey League players following a Hockey Foundation event hosted in London, Ontario, in June of 2018.[3]

The 2003 sexual assault, is reported, to have been a group sexual assault by a half-dozen players on a naked and non-responsive female, which was recorded.[4]  Hockey Canada reports that it has only became aware of the incident in mid-July 2022.[5]

Hockey Canada has reported on July 27, 2022, that it had settled with nine sexual abuse complainants since 1989 for total of $7.6 million.[6]

The police investigations are the most recent developments in the ongoing crisis that is hitting Hockey Canada and led to its funding being suspended by both the federal government and several major corporate sponsors. (1)
