E-Scooter and E-Bike Injuries in Canada

E-Scooter and E-Bike Injuries in Canada: A Safety Reminder for Nova Scotia Families

August 17, 2026  |  NEWS

A recent report has raised serious concerns about e-scooter and e-bike injuries among young people in Canada.

According to the report, the Canadian Paediatric Surveillance Program identified 48 serious injury or death cases involving youth using e-scooters, e-bikes, or similar devices in 2025. The list included 26 hospitalizations lasting more than two days, 12 ICU admissions, and 10 deaths. Head injuries were among the most common serious injuries reported.

For families in Halifax and across Nova Scotia, these numbers are an important reminder of the dangers of operating e-scooters and e-bikes.

E-Scooter and E-Bike Safety in Nova Scotia

E-scooters and e-bikes are becoming more common in Canadian cities, including here in Nova Scotia. They can be convenient, affordable, and accessible. But they also raise real safety questions, especially for children and teens.

Nova Scotia currently sets the minimum age for e-scooter use at 14, and the province has announced plans to ban children under 14 from riding electric bikes this fall.

When an E-Scooter or E-Bike Injury May Lead to a Legal Claim

After a serious e-scooter or e-bike accident, individuals and families may be left with difficult questions around who is responsible. Depending on the circumstances, a legal claim may involve a driver, property owner, municipality, rental company, manufacturer, or another party.

These cases can be complicated because e-scooters and e-bikes do not always fit neatly into the same categories as cars, bicycles, or pedestrians. That makes it important to get advice early, especially when the injury is serious.
