PEI School Bus Incident Highlights Critical Driver Responsibilities

May 25, 2026  |  NEWS

A recent incident in Prince Edward Island serves as an important reminder to all motorists of the heightened caution required when children are present on our roadways.

On May 21, 2026, a young student sustained serious injuries while attempting to board a school bus in Dunstaffnage, near Charlottetown. The school bus was slowing down, with its yellow warning lights activated, when a tractor-trailer travelling in the opposite direction of travel struck the student.

Flashing yellow lights on a school bus signal that the bus is preparing to stop and should be treated similarly to a yellow traffic light. While drivers are not legally required to stop (unlike when a school bus has its red lights activated), drivers are expected to reduce their speed and proceed with increased caution as children may begin crossing the road.

Although the investigation remains ongoing, the incident illustrates the importance of using heightened caution and awareness around school buses, particularly during school hours and in areas where children may be entering or crossing the roadway.
