An alarming incident has come to light involving an educational assistant with the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB). Kevan Henshaw, 32, has been charged with three counts of sexual assault against boys under the age of 14. The alleged incidents date back to September 2022, prompting an investigation initiated by the Ottawa police in November 2023.
Henshaw, employed on a casual basis, was arrested and charged on Wednesday. The OCDSB, upon learning of a complaint regarding his interactions with students in November, promptly suspended him from working in its schools. Legal proceedings and an internal investigation are underway, as stated by board spokesperson Darcy Knoll.
The seriousness of the charges has led investigators to express concern about potential additional victims. Henshaw faces charges of sexual assault, sexual interference with someone under 16, and luring a person under 16 via telecommunication. The Ottawa police, in collaboration with the OCDSB, are seeking information from the public.
Notably, investigators believe there may be victims not only in Ottawa but also in Nova Scotia. Henshaw had worked with youth in various capacities in both locations, prompting a broader search for potential victims.
Several institutions, including the Ottawa Catholic School Board and The Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre, have severed ties with Henshaw upon learning of the allegations. The police encourage anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing the seriousness of the charges and the need for a thorough investigation.
